Starting January 1999, America began a unique and historically compelling ten-year celebration of the 50 States. A series of five quarter dollars with new reverses will be issued each year from 1999 through 2008 celebrating each of the 50 states of the Union.

Signed by President Clinton on December 1, 1997, the 50 State Quarters™ Program Act provides for the redesign of the reverse side of the quarter dollars with designs emblematic of each of the 50 States. The coins will be issued in the sequence that the states became part of the United States of America.

To make more room on the reverse of the commemorative quarters for each state's design, Congress has also separately authorized the Mint to move certain design elements from the reverse to the obverse, and vice versa, creating a new Quarter obverse design as well.

For many collectors, this means that over the next 10 years a complete set can be assembled from pocket change.  Even better, the Mint will be producing a variety of special products, including a Five State Proof Set and a SILVER Proof Set.

Starting now you can inexpensively begin to build complete 50 State Quarters collection for all the young people in your life.  You'll be sharing the fun of the delightful tradition that will grow through the years.
