called - departed from the realm of British coinage at the time of the
demise of King Charles I. Following
a long and bitter civil war, the Roundheads looked with great disfavor on
all things bearing the proud title ‘Royal’.

ever coinage of the western world. Traditionally
the British gold sovereign, first struck in 1816, was the most popular of

stunning coin for the sixth in this wonderful series. This year's issue is
based on 'the Sistine Madonna' by Raphael Sanzio that hangs in the Dresden
Museum in Germany and features the Madonna from behind a curtain and the
darling angels leaning on the balustrade at the painting base. Raphael
(1483-1520) became one of the greatest and most famous painters during the
Italian Renaissance and is generally considered to be one of the most
popular artists of all time.
