Reference Book
Paper Money of the United States
Arthur
L. & Ira Friedberg
This is the 17th fully revised
edition of the standard reference work that has been issued since the late
Robert Friedberg (1912-1963) authored the original version in 1953. This one
is the first that includes color photographs, which illustrate the
collection of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.
From the first year of paper money, 1861, to the present, the fronts and
backs of all classes and types of currency, from 3 cents to 10,000 dollars
are illustrated. There are more than 800 photographs. These are accompanied
by text which lists, describes and evaluates (more than 8,000 prices) every
variety of paper money issued. The result is a complete pictorial,
descriptive and numismatic history of the currency of the United States.
There are also sections on Colonial and Continental Currency (notes issued
from 1680 to 1788), a comprehensive listing by type of the issues of the
Confederate States of America, and a complete listing of National Bank
issuers.
Those who collect paper money depend on the Friedberg Numbering System, a
uniform method of cataloguing currency that is accepted as the international
standard for American currency. The numbering shorthand, along with hundreds
of black and white photographs, enables anyone to instantly locate a
specific banknote, and allows a dealer to advertise a note without need of
extensive description.
The color illustrations of a nearly complete collection of United States
large size notes show American paper money as indisputable works of art and
beauty. The notes represent the core of one of the world's finest
assemblages of American paper money - that of the Federal Reserve Bank of
San Francisco. Not only are many of the specimens in the finest state of
preservation possible, but some are also so extremely rare that they may
only be seen on the pages of the book or at the Bank itself. The attractive,
hard-bound book also includes a price appreciation chart showing the
advancement in value from 1953 to the present.
Paper money moved to new heights of popularity in 1998. Those surfing the
web will find that it has its own discussion group. Auction and private sale
prices have moved to record levels, which the pricing guide portion of the
book reveals.
Leading experts from across the country participated in providing
information, including 75 active dealers who provided current pricing for
evaluation by the research team headed by Arthur and Ira Friedberg.
