Newfoundland
The origins of the Newfoundland go back nearly a thousand years to the
crossing of indigenous breeds with the giant bear dogs of the Viking
explorers. Its thick water-repellant coat, rudder-like tail and webbed
feet make it ideally suited for work with Newfoundland's Fishermen.
Nova Scotia Duck Tolling
Retriever
Developed in the 1860's, the behavior of the Duck Tolling Retriever mimics
that of the fox in its ability to lure game. Tolling in fact means the
ability to lure game by appealing to their curiosity. The dog works
with a concealed hunter luring ducks towards the shore with its playful
antics.
Labrador Retriever
Dogs abandoned by European fishermen in the 1600's were rediscovered in
the 18th century. On their own the dogs had become accomplished hunters.
Specimens where sent back to Europe and crossbred to existing retriever
breeds. The resulting dogs became the most valued game dog in Britain.
Canadian Eskimo Dog
The origins of this breed go back nearly 2000 years, being brought to
Canada's northern lands by the Mongolian's migration from Asia. It is
known for its endurance and toughness, able to pull up to 80 Kilos (175
pounds) 80 kilometers (50 miles) a day.
